The Zamzam Well

People need water for almost for everything but not all water carries the same value and significance. Muslims refer to the water of Zamzam as something revered and distinctive. The Zamzam well is located within the Masjid al-Haram in Makkah, Saudi Arabia, the holiest place in Islam.  According to Islamic mythology, it is a miraculously generated source of water from Allah Talah, which sprang thousands of years ago when Hazrat Ibrāhīm (A.S.) infant son Hazrat ʼIsmāʻīl A.S. was left with his mother Hazrat Hājara R.A in the desert, where he was extremely thirsty and kept crying. His mother was intense worried and looked for water for him, but could not find any water. She climbed to the top of Mount al-Safaa, praying to Allah to help her and give her water for infant Hazrat ʼIsmāʻīl A.S. then she climbed to the top of Mount al-Marwah and did the same for seven times.
Allah Almighty sent Angel Hazrat Jibreel A.S., and he struck the earth, and water appeared. Prophet Hazrat Ibrahim (pbuh) later returned to that place and rebuilds the first Bait-ul-Allah (House of Allah), originally build by Adam (pbuh). Because of its square shape, it is called The Kaa’bah. It is the holiest Muslim shrine, now stands in the center of the Holy Mosque, also called Al-Haram. The Zamzam well is located within the Holy Mosque at about 20 m east of the Kaa’bah.

Millions of pilgrims visit the well each year while performing the Hajj or Umrah pilgrimages, in order to drink its water. It is believed to be the oldest well on planet earth, as water has been flowing there for more than 4500 years. The holy zamzam well pumps up to 18.5 liters per second and is only 30 meters deep. The old building of the Zamzam well was in the middle of the Mataf; it was composed of quite a few floors. Thus it included a copper ring and well cover, in addition to a water wheel dating back to the 14th century. There was also a bucket of copper dating back to 1299; it is now put in the Museum of Architecture of the Two Holy Mosques. Therefore, in 1377AH, upon the expansion of the Mataf, the Zamzam building was removed to facilitate the entrance of pilgrims.

In 2010, King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz commenced a project to build the Zamzam Water Treatment and Filtration station, located 4.5 km away from Al-Masjid Al-Haram.  Hence more than 120 tons of Zamzam water is transported on a daily basis to the tanks at Al-Masjid al-Nabawi in Madinah through truck tankers with special specifications to protect the water from any damage. Zamzam water is provided in 7000 sterile containers, distributed inside and around the Prophet’s Mosque. Muslim craves this water and love to drink it whenever they can. Pilgrims return home carrying Zamzam water for thousands of miles as a prized possession and to give as special gift to their friends and families.

The Zamzam water is not ordinary water came to being in the middle of desert, continuously flowing water from thousands of years and never dries up. It is continually replenishing itself in order to produce gallons upon gallons of water for the consumption of thirsty pilgrims plus the additional amount that is bottled up and also the amount that is taken as gifts and distributed worldwide to millions. Zamzam water has scientifically been proven to contain healing qualities due to its higher content of Calcium and Magnesium Salts and also natural fluorides that encompass a germicidal action. It is also an established scientific fact that pools or water wells tend to grow vegetation such as algae especially in warm climates. Miraculously this is not the case in the well of Zamzam, has remained free from bilogical contaminations.
Within Zam-zam is an ingredient different to other waters, which heals and assist energetic and cell systems within the human body. The German scientist Dr. Knut Pfeiffer, the head of the largest medical centre in Munich has studied that Zamzam water astonishingly increased the energy levels in the cell systems of the human body. Zamzam water fasting helps to boost blood platelets, enhance the immunity of the body, increases WBCs, RBCs and detoxify the body. Applying zamzam water over your eyes helps to brighten the eyesight. Washing your eyes with this holy water is also supportive to cure many eye related disorders. The water is alkaline in nature, which neutralize the excess acid formed in the stomach thus beneficial for hyperacidity and heartburn.
